Weaving a Tapestry of Hope in Burundi's Highlands
Imagine the mist, a soft veil draping the emerald hills of Burundi, where the rich volcanic soil holds the promise of exceptional coffee. It's here, in this land of breathtaking beauty, that a remarkable story began to unfold in 2015, born from the shared vision of two Burundi-born engineers, Pontien Ntunzwenimana and Dan Brose. While Dan's roots extended to America, his heart resonated deeply with the country of his birth, a place brimming with potential, yet bearing the scars of past hardship. Their dream, though simple, was powerful: to harness the extraordinary coffee of Burundi as a catalyst for growth and prosperity, forging a strong connection between the tireless hands of thousands of smallholder farmers and a world eager to savor their exquisite beans.
The journey commenced in the remote, mountainous embrace of Mutambu, near the very spine of the continent. Here, the lingering effects of a 12-year civil war had taken their toll on coffee farms, leaving precious Arabica trees neglected and access to vital processing stations a distant hope. It was in this landscape of resilience that Migoti Coffee took its first courageous step in 2016, facilitating the construction of a modern washing station – a beacon of hope that whispered to the farmers, "It's time to believe again, to reinvest in your future." Like a seed taking root and flourishing, Migoti grew, extending its reach to Nyabiraba with the establishment of another washing station. Then, in 2022, came an innovative and transformative partnership, as Migoti joined forces with existing coffee cooperatives, not only to elevate quality but also to unlock the gateway to the global market. The year 2023 marked another significant milestone, the inauguration of the Kinama washing station, a testament to their unwavering dedication, capable of processing an impressive 600 tons of coffee. From a close-knit circle of 310 farmers in 2019, Migoti's family has blossomed to encompass 1236 dedicated growers by 2023, their small farms nestled like hidden jewels in the highlands near Lake Tanganyika, gracing the western slopes of Burundi's majestic mountains.
What is the secret that makes Migoti's coffee so utterly captivating? It begins with the very essence of Burundi – the soaring altitudes, where the air is crisp and pure, the ancient volcanic soil, teeming with life, and a climate seemingly crafted for the delicate dance of the Arabica plant. The Red Bourbon variety thrives in this haven, promising a cup that dances with vibrant sweetness and sings with bright acidity. Yet, Migoti's commitment goes far beyond simply relying on nature's gifts. With meticulous care and unwavering attention, they guide the beans through their transformation, offering a trio of processing methods – Washed, Natural, and Honey – each coaxing forth a unique and unforgettable melody of flavors. Orchestrating this symphony of quality is Zephyrin Banzubaze, their esteemed Quality and Production Manager, a Q Grader whose profound expertise serves as the guiding compass at every stage. In Zephyrin's words, Migoti's coffee is special because of its "unique flavors (complexity and brightness), farming practices, skills and techniques in processing, and the story behind the production of quality, green coffee". His Q Grader certification stands as a testament, a guarantee of the exceptional standards that Migoti passionately upholds.
However, the true heartbeat of Migoti's story resonates with the rhythm of empowerment. They forge a profound partnership with the thousands of smallholder farmers, walking hand-in-hand to share invaluable knowledge of good agricultural practices, nurturing not only the land but also the immense potential within each grower. Since 2019, Migoti has generously provided approximately 30,000 coffee seedlings each year, sowing the seeds of a future filled with promise and prosperity. Recognizing that genuine empowerment extends beyond the boundaries of the farm, Migoti has woven a strong safety net of financial literacy, skillfully connecting farmers with local micro-finance programs, offering a hand up rather than a handout, and equipping them with the tools to build a secure future. The inspiring tale of Anesie Ndikumana shines as a powerful beacon of this transformative impact. The washing station that Migoti helped to establish in her community in 2016 wasn't merely a structure of concrete and steel; it was, in fact, the key that unlocked the door to her daughter's future, with the income derived from her coffee harvest directly enabling her to pay for her education – a moving testament to the profound truth that valuing the bean can uplift an entire family and reshape the course of generations. Dan Brose speaks with pride of the strong bonds they've cultivated, relationships built upon unwavering trust and fairness, which have enabled Migoti to increase the price paid to these dedicated farmers for their precious cherries by an astounding 125% in a mere five years.
Migoti's visionary outlook stretches far beyond the fragrant fields of coffee. It embraces the very essence of the community. In close proximity to the Kinama washing station, a new lifeline is being constructed – a vital water reservoir and an intricate network of pipes, funded by the shared belief of roasters who deeply understand that true partnership entails a profound investment in people. This is far more than just providing access to clean water; it's about safeguarding health, liberating the invaluable time of women and children, and nurturing a wealth of new opportunities for over 4,800 residents. And, much like a thriving and diverse ecosystem, Migoti has cultivated another sustainable source of income for farmers – an innovative essential oils project, where lemongrass, eucalyptus, and artemisia flourish, offering a secondary harvest, a crucial buffer against the inherent uncertainties of farming. The washing stations themselves stand as vibrant hubs of opportunity, providing stable employment for around 10 permanent staff and meaningful seasonal work for over 250 individuals, the majority of whom are women.

Migoti's profound respect for the land is intricately woven into every decision they make, a deep-seated understanding that the long-term future of coffee is inextricably linked to the enduring health of the earth. They wholeheartedly champion sustainable practices – the nurturing shade of carefully planted trees, the life-giving embrace of mulch, the quiet strength of soil stabilization – all working in harmonious concert to address the natural biennial cycles of the coffee plants and build resilience against the growing challenges of climate change. Their unwavering commitment to sustainability is rightfully recognized by the esteemed Rainforest Alliance certification, a badge of honor that, in Dan Brose's words, "helps us as a company to have better practices and accountability in how we operate with farmers, employees, environment, etc.".
As they cast their gaze towards the horizon, Migoti's dreams continue to expand and flourish. They envision a wider family of 1500 farmers, the enticing aroma of their own roasted coffee gracing local markets, and the steady hum of a solar/hydropower mini-grid bringing the gift of sustainable power to the Mutambu region. For Dan, the future holds the exciting prospect of forging even deeper collaborations with existing cooperatives, thereby amplifying their transformative impact across the entire Burundi coffee landscape. And Zephyrin's heartfelt hope echoes the very soul of Migoti: "excellence of Migoti coffee at the cup at an international scale, and a change of our farmers’ living conditions".
At the very core of Migoti's story lies a profound belief in the power of transparency and trust. They tirelessly strive to create a clear and open path from the dedicated farmer's hands to the appreciative consumer's cup, fostering genuine and meaningful connections at every step of the journey. For Dan, these fundamental values form the unshakeable bedrock of healthy and thriving relationships – with the passionate growers who pour their lives into cultivating the beans, with the skilled roasters who unlock their hidden potential, and with the discerning consumers who savor the exquisite final brew. This ethos of trust is nurtured through consistent and honest communication, ethical dealings, and warmly welcoming roasters to witness their impactful work firsthand. In Zephyrin's eloquent words, Migoti and the farmers they support "work like a family by working in a transparent way, providing good, quick services". Their belief is both simple and powerful: by lifting each other up, by strengthening each other's hands, the entire Burundi coffee sector can flourish and thrive.
And so, the inspiring story of Migoti Coffee continues to unfold, not merely as a tale of exceptional coffee beans, but as a resounding testament to the transformative power of ethical practices, an unwavering commitment to community, and a deep-seated belief in the boundless potential of Burundi's coffee heartland.
